Toll-free call to the Philippines

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Latest update: GoogleTalk now offers free call to USA/Canada from your Gmail account. If you’re in the Middle East, this might work to reach the ATA in the Philippines. Try this out!

My family and friends abroad loved my new trick for them to save on overseas calls. I give them an access number in their locality. When they call this Access Number then dial another number, my Internet phone in the Philippines rings!  Free for them but not for me cuz’  I’m paying for the Internet connection. In this worsening economy, this is a big savings for everyone. Nothing beats free!

They were able to adapt easily because:

  • they’re dinosaurs, non-techies - don’t know how to use Yahoo Chat or Skype,
  • they prefer to use the phone than to type,
  • it’s quicker than using a PC, Skype or even Magic Jack (see at the end why?), and;
  • they can call me anytime, anywhere and my brother, too, in Cagayan de Oro.

This is not an illegal hack but a legal way how to fully utilize new technology and gadgets being a telecom guy.  Although it requires broadband Internet connection but the DSL monthly fee is peanuts compared to the savings in overseas calls.

How it’s done?

  1. I bought an Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA)
  2. Plugged an ordinary telephone set -  another unit, not the one provided by my telephone company
  3. Plugged the ATA to my Internet modem
  4. Power up the ATA and modem
  5. Configured the ATA with a VoIP account
  6. In a few minutes, the phone is ready

The best feature of my setup is - it’s computer-less and 24/7 online! Of course, I still use my computer to surf, email, chat, etc.

To make things easier for you, this company, LanVox Systems , supplies pre-configured ATAs called MagicBox.PH, which is available only to Philippine residents. They provide an easy-to-follow Installation Guide.  Non-techies can set this up in a few minutes. LanVox also pointed out that this is the cheapest setup for voice-only application since there’s no need for a P20,000 or more laptop.

Bingo! Now your family back home has a 24/7 Internet phone you can call for free - anytime, anywhere!  Search your access number from this list of 200+ Access Numbers around the globe.

FAQs

Can you call landline or mobile phones?
Yes but I have to upgrade my plan to Pay-As-You-Go - no monthly fee. For heavy callers, there are monthly plans USA/Canada Unlimited ($18.95) and Unlimited World plan ($29.95/month). As a workaround, I call them if it’s an emergency (paid) and they call back (free).

How can traditional and mobile phones call me?
Two methods:
   1) For free - via Access Numbers. Callers dial their local Access Number then they dial *462 + 1777xxxxxxx + #.
   2) With monthly fee.  I have to purchase a Phone Number (approx. $5.95/month) in cities I choose - NY,LA,UK,HK,etc. but that’s too much for me unless I need it for business. So, back to Method #1.

Is this better than Yahoo, Skype or Vonage?
Any setup that uses PC cannot sustain round-the-clock operation. It’s complicated for non-techies e.g. plain housewives and parents. My setup is similar to Vonage but I’m not paying $17.95 per month!

How about MagicJack?
Although it uses ordinary phone set, you still need a PC - still not fit for 24/7 operation and besides, why spend P20,000 for the laptop when a P6,000 box can deliver 24/7? MagicJack is only limited within USA/Canada. With my setup, my friends in UK, Europe, NZ, Australia and Singapore can call me for free.

Is it possible to talk with mobile phones for free?
Yes. Get mobile phones with Wi-fi access feature like Nokia E51/52, E63, N70, N95, etc. then get a free VoIP account from me.

Hi,
try using freeworlddialup.com (free SIP number) + ipkall.com (for a free US number)(this is optional) + your VOIP hardware or X-lite from counterpath.com . Calls to 1-800 numbers are free from this VOIP setup. just add * to the 1800 number to call.

with this setup, anybody from the US or from any part of the world can call your SIP number or the US number (if they prefer).

regards!

hi julius,

i registered to several providers including FreeWorldDialup (FWD) and IPKall. so, the best IMHO, is Callcentric because it’s free registration and they have lots of PSTN access numbers worldwide. fyi, FWD now require annual payment.

you might try Callcentric from my setup guide link.

Working abroad is really hard for us. Aside from the big salary, we cannot stop missing our family. We are thankful enough to have these cheap ways in calling our loved ones in the Philippines. With this, it is more likely that we are together with our family.

Posted by cheap call to Philippines at September 18, 2008, 12:24 am

Try GlobeDID, www.globedid.com
only 9.9 for landline
13.9 for cell
I am happy customer.

Posted by Kens at September 27, 2008, 3:44 am

Kens,

good for you that you’re happy w/ GlobeDID but 9.9/13.9 cents per minute is still a recurring expense. if you read my blog on SIP-enabled mobile phones like Nokia E51, E65 and N95, it’s possible to call Phil mobile phone from the US - FREE! earlier brands/models can become SIP-enabled too by installing SIP applications found in http://www.fring.com or http://gizmo5.com

Thanks for providing other options to the readers anyway.

Posted by gcd at September 27, 2008, 7:36 am

hey there,

you know, i’ve been browsing websites that offers free international calling but guess what, philippines is always 100% excluded! might as well fold the site down if there’s no PI in there..but when i saw your site and read all that you’ve done to make free calls to the philippines- finally, i said!! justice!!

anyway, since some of the terms you’ve used i’m not so familiar with, the others i am..printed out your article and will start right away..one question though, will this work both ways? i mean like from here in the states to manila and vise versa? of course they have to do the same, right? and have high speed internet..

being abroad does make a difference when making international calls, sure..like paying your calls with change you have under the seat of your car, a few bills here and there..but if you’re like me that spends $600 a month on phone cards alone, running up my office fone and home fone long distance bill to several thousand dollars a month JUST BY CALLING THE PHILIPPINES? I DON’T CARE HOW HARD IT IS TO DO, HOW MAY SEEM SO COMPLICATED, VERSUS WHAT I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH MONTHLY, I WILL DO THIS AND MAKE IT WORK FOR ME EVEN IF I HAVE TO TAKE A VACATION!

THANK YOU

Posted by Tony at September 28, 2008, 12:10 am

tony,

yes, it's quite difficult to terminate VoIP calls to the Philippines because telcos are not yet open to VoIP this time. with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), an open VoIP protocol which i recommend, it may be possible to work both ways but i have to get more details from you. i'll send you a private mail so you can communicate w/ me directly. for other readers, you may leave a message at http://sites.google.com/site/lanvoxphils.

Hi
I read your blog, quite interesting.
I have couple of questions, hope you can answer me.
My First Question is: Iam from India, and If set up your SIP and softphone.. at my Family House in NAGA City in Philippines, can I be able to make Free Unlimited calls to them? Or they can call me Free Unlimited!
Either ways, we have to stay together and need to talk alot. So what is the cheapest and best way to talk Unlimited. I mean calls between India and Philippines Unlimited.
We both have Broadband Internet Connection, so that will help you in solving my problem.

Hope to get an early reply from you.
Please do write a mail at omarmo@support.earthlink.net
That is my E-mail add, so looking forward for response.

Thanks.

Posted by Omar at April 8, 2009, 5:17 pm

hi omar,

good that you took the effort to ask.

ok. you can call unlimited-free to the Philippines when both ends have SIP phone device. this would be easy since you already have broadband connection.

re SIP device, you can install softphone on PC. but the limitation - you can’t have 24/7 availability. i highly recommend dedicated, portable SIP phone adaptor so you can leave it on 24/7, just like the usual phone … very convenient. i mentioned this in my email.

finally, there’s no monthly fee for SIP-to-SIP calls.

cheers!

Posted by gcd at April 12, 2009, 9:30 pm

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Does only ONE person need the SIP? I mean, if I want to talk to someone in the Philippines (I live in the U.S.), and I do all of the things you listed in the instructions, will the person in the Philippines be able to call me from her cell phone, without having to do all of those things? Is that what you meant by free incoming calls from anywhere in the world? THanks.

Posted by Andrew at June 26, 2009, 9:13 pm

andrew,

yes, only device is needed in the Philippines. You can dial Philippines via access number - for free. Philippines can also dial USA for only $0.01/minute (Pay-per-call plan).

There are access numbers around the world. If this number happens to be a local call, then that’s all his cost. If it’s free - it’s free to the Philippines.

I hope it helps.

I have a question sir. after I buy a VOIP phone, what should I do next?
please do email me.
Thank you very much!!!!

hi
can u teach me how to use the freecall from my PC using the my internet account..
I am from dubai..i want to call in the philippines on mobiles..
Is it really possible? Coz wen i was back home my friend called me on my mobile using the freecall.. but i haven’t ask how he do it..??

Please help..
tHanks a lot!!

Posted by candy at January 19, 2010, 8:18 pm

@Icel: once the IP phone is online, you can start placing cheap calls abroad e.g. $0.01 USA/Canada/etc.

then, we’ll give you instructions how to call the IP phone from regular phones AND other IP phones so that you can disseminate it to your callers. i’ll contact you privately via email.

@candy: after browsing freecall’s website, you hv to download/install freecall software and use it to dial regular phones anywhere - some are free but most destinations are not. however, if u hv the right mobile phone model, you can place toll-free call to the philippines and vice-versa.

But it WORKS!!!!!!

So proud of my once little brother..sooo curious as a kid. used to call him”gobaniko”…just didn’t realize he is our little einstein.

Love u brother.

I will wait for your reply!

Posted by leonard at March 19, 2010, 6:06 am

nang vicky, tks for sharing this.

Posted by gcd at March 19, 2010, 6:40 am

hi leonard,

my setup is reachable from wifi-enabled mobile phones abroad. it should work from dubai UNLESS your ISPs are blocking VoIP traffic. you should test it. i’ll email you to get more details about your mobile phone.

however, to call mobile phones in the Phils is possible (assuming your wifi mobile works) but needs a more sophisticated eqpt - only justifiable in business environment.

getting a phone adaptor for the Phils can be a great savings cuz ADAPTOR PHILS MOBILE DUBAI is cheaper than LANDLINE PHILS MOBILE DUBAI. pls see my latest blog how it’s made possible.

cheers!
-nandy

Posted by gcd at March 19, 2010, 7:59 am

@leonard: it should read

ADAPTOR PHILS - MOBILE DUBAI
LANDLINE PHILS - MOBILE DUBAI

Posted by gcd at March 19, 2010, 8:02 am

Will this require internet service in Philippines? My family dont have an internet line yet but they do have landline. Im very much interested in this.
Please send me more info: requirements and rates.

Thanks!

sir im not as techie as u are pls teach me how can i call my family from the philippines im in dubai i want to use my samsung i900 would that be possible can i call free or lowest possible rate pls help

Posted by giselle at April 6, 2010, 9:14 pm

Hello,
Do you still give walk-thrus setting up this device? If so, do you think you can help me? I wanna be able to call my gf in the PI for free.

Posted by jay at May 19, 2010, 1:03 pm

@Jaide: yes, it requires internet connection. if you don’t hv internet at home, get one and get a pre-configured internet phone adaptor to avoid the hassles of setting up the gadget. there’s a small company based in Lapulapu City, Cebu that supplies pre-configured adaptors at very reasonable monthly fee. visit http://sites.google.com/site/lanvoxphils.

Posted by gcd at May 19, 2010, 4:38 pm

@giselle: i still hv to get the specs of the samsung i900 if it’s WLAN and VoIP enabled. in any case, you need an Internet Phone Adaptor in the Phils. pls see my reply to Jaide.

Posted by gcd at May 19, 2010, 4:40 pm

@Jay: getting a pre-configured phone adaptor in the Phils is the best option. there’s one reader who ordered one unit for his GF in the Phils while he was in Germany. he transferred to iraq then to afghanistan and he communicates w/ his GFs device.

Posted by gcd at May 19, 2010, 4:44 pm

hello again…sorry for the follow up email. My other question is:

I’m here in the U.S. If I purchase a ATA and configure everything accordingly since I already have a broadband connection, do I still need to sign up for a VOIP to get access numbers in order for me to initiate a free call , landline/cell phone? If so, then it wouldn’t be a free internet call since signing up requires subscription. Am I wrong in this area? Please advice. If possible, can you send me email privately? Thanks sir!

Posted by jay at May 20, 2010, 12:36 pm

hello sir gcd. Im here in dubai can you help me call my family in the phils. I have an internet connection also. Hope to hear from you

Posted by jayson at June 16, 2010, 5:25 pm

@jeyson,

tks for dropping by.

if Dubai is not blocking VoIP traffic, i suggest you get 2 pre-configured ATA (analog telephone adaptor). one for the Phils and bring the other unit to Dubai. it’s 100% unlimited free call bothways.

if it’s blocked, we can only save. much cheaper than using phone cards. how? u need only 1 ATA for the Phils. don’t call the Phils anymore. instead, call one of the access numbers in 37 countries e.g. USA. toll charge will be Dubai-to-USA. Phil ATA can call Dubai - the toll charge will be USA-to-Dubai. this is lot cheaper than Dubai-Phils call or vice-versa.

u can get pre-configured ATA at http://sites.google.com/site/lanvoxphils.

hv u read other posts in this blog? read about Access Numbers cuz you can use your regular phone to call the Phils. the MagicBox is needed only in the Phils.

tks for dropping by.

Hi gcd,

I need advise for the best equipment to use to have calls incoming and outgoing from manila, philippines to vancouver.

I wanted people to be able to reach me from a landline number (not sip) and would direct this call to my SIP phone in vancouver. At the same time vice versa in case i needed to call someone.

Is this possible? Please kindly email me at trooper_889@yahoo.com

Hi i am interested in calling philippine mobiles for free. I see some really successful testimonials here. Can you help me too. Thanks.

Posted by aleurre at January 19, 2011, 9:00 pm

hi aleurre,

this solution uses a phone adaptor. for mobile phones, yes it’s possible. i’ve written another post for this entitled “… free calls in Wifi hotspots using GSM/WLAN phones”. it requires a higher end model. but the huge savings will easily justify your investment.

take a look at MagicBox.PH in Fb. it’s great setup, too.

tks for dropping by.

s this all you can offer? Making cheap calls in specified country? I don’t think it’s practical- it’s quite not good to be called as great network service. Yes, it can be good for those who have relatives in India whom they will call to. But, I think this is not a good marketing strategy since the service is only available in specific area.I bet, my service (overseas call) is one of the greatest phone services anyone can have. I enjoy calling my friends anywhere in the world, without hassles and annoying interruptions and of course at cheap cost. This is almost perfect.

Posted by james at April 26, 2011, 2:09 am

@james,

this solution works anywhere in the world - not just in the Philippines. i just focused in the Philippines for the meantime to help our fellow countrymen all over the world. same as your service, i can also make cheap calls anywhere in the world and we still hv some solutions we kept to our readers this time.

Hi, what is the difference between this and applying for toll free numbers? I am actually looking for a toll free phone number merchants that is Philippine based. Thank you

Posted by Kathleen at July 11, 2011, 6:21 pm

There’s a new site called YouTelo that focuses on the Filipino market. It’s nice to see for a change. They are even giving every new user free calls to the philippines with the promo code. The code is PH1000 but apparently is only for the next 1000 visitors. I’m not sure how busy they are so u may want to go get your free calls at the least. They also have a $5 24 hour unlimited card to PLDT, and Sun, Smart & Globe Top-Up.

Here is the link for YouTelo and the promo code for the free philippines calling. Hope u enjoy!

Posted by Josh Blanqueza at August 3, 2011, 4:19 am

@kathleen

what we mean by toll-free is - no long-distance charges. my callers are not using toll-free numbers BUT local access numbers. the former is free for callers nationwide but the later is a regular phone number. so, the caller has to search for it. the advantage, esp for filipinos abroad, it’s available worldwide.

now, what do want to accomplish w/ toll-free numbers based in the Philippines?

thanks for dropping by! :-)
