Cheap or even free calls in Wi-Fi hotspots using GSM/WLAN phones

Friday, July 18, 2008

The availability of wi-fi hotspots is increasing - malls, coffee shops, etc. Hotel guests are looking for wifi in their rooms, too. So two  5-star hotels here in Cebu just activated 100% wifi access to the guest rooms. During our speed tests, I made VoIP calls using my laptop hooked up with a USB phone. I was able to contact Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro and USA. The quality is good - not bad for a free call. What could be a better device to use than a WLAN-enabled mobile phone? Imagine you can even make free calls in hotspots and still be able to text/talk through your regular network?

I was looking for WLAN phones to recommend to a prospective client. I have selected WLAN-only phones. However, I found GSM phones w/ WLAN feature. Aha, this is it - a dual-mode GSM/WLAN mobile phone!  I looked further for popular models and I found a good candidate - the Nokia E51. So I browsed the User Manual. I searched the SIP parameters. Indeed the unit has a SIP feature, the most popular protocol used  in VoIP phones. So this phone can do VoIP in Wi-Fi hotspots. Perfect.

But to the newbies, this is their major stumbling block - what is SIP; how to input the host, username, password, etc; where to get these?

I have a good news for those who would like to try SIP on Nokia E51 or other models. Register first for a free SIP account with here  or the Callcentric link found in this website http://lanvoxph.googlepages.com . Once you have your assigned phone number,  send me a message. Your account is free and it has voicemail so you won’t miss any call. Please click from those links so I can support your account.

For non-techies, we can also setup the account for you. We’ll give you the details how to program your mobile phone. We also supply pre-configured phone adaptors (ATA). ATA has the ff advantages:

  • no PCs needed
  • you use it like an ordinary phone
  • you’re online 24/7 - no need for appointment calls
  • no monthly fees
